Anyway, They have an insert and they heat up and give off heat for quite a while after the fire goes out because of the stone...
Ours is old and doesn't have a damper like a wood stove chimney, just a little dial that works like a thermostat that opens/closes a little air vent that no longer works. It's a tight fit and I can't find another insert to fit in there (is an old east german model and the western ones are wider).
Was wondering if it would serve the same purpose (or maybe even better) to just fasten the little vent closed and put a damper in the chimney pipe. Other option is take the whole thing out and replace it with a wood stove but we really like what we have. Seals and new fire stones inside are available just the idea of a wide open chimney sucking out heat is nagging. Seems closing a damper down would make it heat up faster???
