It would seem to me from my stove experience that you really need to control the inlet air. You need to have your flue draft sucking in the combustion air and sucking products of combustion, like CO out. If you decide to replace the whole structure, for years we have used Surdiac stoves made in Belgium. which are thermostatically controlled by a controlled damper at the inlet. Another feature is that they gravity feed from a built in hopper above and to the rear of the combustion chamber.
