Yep. that's what the people I bought the house from had put over cedar shingles, it is that much more wind proofing, and keeps the vinal laps from getting hooked in the old bottom edges. Just did a repair around a new door and couple windows I put in last week- and they don't sell that color anymore!! Talk about scroungin and measuring pieces like a jig saw puzzle. Sometimes it seems vinal siding is a toss up to painting, rather not have either, but til next time, vinal 'usually' holds up longer. I had a house I tore the old clap boards off, put thicker foam on like mentioned above... that didn't work out so well...had to re-engineer every door and window frame. And was one more big nail infessed mess to deal with...
