O/T Vinyl Siding..........

I've worked with vinyl siding before, but I've never put it over existing 3" cedar lapped siding.

What sort of underlay do you use, if any? I'm looking ahead at doing a house that has had some remodeling done in double four vinyl, and the rest is original.

Your life will be a lot easier to pull the old cedar siding off then put up a foam board like heikemper said. You get to many layers of siding and you windows start to look like they are sunken into the side of the house and keeping everything level becames an issue too.

The cedar siding adds no R value and you'll get a chance to examine the old sheeting for rotten spots that should be repaired rather than buried.

The siding comes off pretty easy - especially if you are not trying to salvage it.

I sided the house I grew up in over shingles. We put 1/2" foil face foam on because we needed more insulation. I think you can put it on with or without, either way you just use long enough nails and don't drive them home so the siding can float.

Yep. that's what the people I bought the house from had put over cedar shingles, it is that much more wind proofing, and keeps the vinal laps from getting hooked in the old bottom edges. Just did a repair around a new door and couple windows I put in last week- and they don't sell that color anymore!! Talk about scroungin and measuring pieces like a jig saw puzzle. Sometimes it seems vinal siding is a toss up to painting, rather not have either, but til next time, vinal 'usually' holds up longer. I had a house I tore the old clap boards off, put thicker foam on like mentioned above... that didn't work out so well...had to re-engineer every door and window frame. And was one more big nail infessed mess to deal with...

I you are really concerned about sealing up the house and saving energy I would recommend tearing down to the studs and sheeting with material of your choice, then housewrap and siding.

I tore off all my old cedar siding under the aluminum siding and resheeted it has made the house much more comfortable in the winter. It was well worth all the work.

When my house was vinyl sided they didn't strip anything. The house originally had 1" dutch-lap siding. Shingles were placed over this. Then 1/2" foil backed foam was added before the vinyl siding.

It does make the windows look a little sunken, but all the layers do a nice job reducing outside noise. If you live near a road or noisy neighbors, consider leaving the cedar if it's in good condition.

Good luck.

Window and door sills, 3/4" beyond plank underlayment. One layer of 1/2" pine clapboard for 110 years, no worries. Tear old clap board off. Have 3/4 inch once again, just as day house was framed. Pull all old nails, take shovel and make sure surface of board clean and flat. Place 2 inch foam in place. Secure in place. Add 1/2" vinal clapboard. 2+1/2-3/4= 1 3/4" J channel needed around every door and window sill, they don't make it, hench 'engineer a substitute'.... As discribed in a post above.... 'that, sunken look...'

Enough of the house has already been done so no exterior doors will be involved, and I intend to replace the windows at the same time or before, so I can just space the windows out and cut wider interior moldings.

Frankly, I'm not too wild about tearing all the old siding off.

Well, Goose, it's dusty dirty work pulling off the old siding, but if you strip the siding off to the sheeting you can do a better job of sealing up the house before the new siding goes on. And you will have a flatter surface to put the new siding on. Jim
