I have a model 287 (7') Bush Hog mower. Blades are sharpened and/or replaced every spring. I cover about 100 acres annually.... with most of it clipping/mulching heavy pasture residue. I run my PTO at about 90% of 540 at a 3mph ground speed for best results. I calculated that I would save about 3/4 gal of diesel (or more) if I ran the tractor at 1300 -1400 rpm. At my current price for farm diesel I would save somewher between $280 and $300. However, I like to listen to the radio while in the cab, doing this rather boring task... and at 2200 rpms (even though I have a rather quiet.. 79db noise level cab) ...it's still much too noisy for me to hear talk radio clearly..... you can only take so much country and western... mind starts to turn to mush after awhile... thanks for the tips...
