PTO step up transmission

I would like to provide 540 PTO speed without having to run my tractors at 2200 to 2400 rpm. I do a lot of pasture clipping with my bush hog mower and would consider an auxillary transmission on the front of the gear box. Any suggestions?...thanks

How much are you expecting to save?

With a DB with an integral 2 speed PTO box, 25-30% savings easy when doing light work like running an auger or spraying. Mowing I wouldn't expect as nearly much. Even with $4 fuel you are talking a long pay back period.

"HUB CITY" has just about any kind of "Step up"
or "Step Down" , or pto gearbox you may need,
but they are a quality built, American product,
and don't come cheep!

Get a bigger bushhog, it will save you as much fuel. Sharpen your blades helps a lot on fuel use w bushhog too. Don't run at 540 unless you really need to, it will still cut ok with sharp blades.

I have a model 287 (7') Bush Hog mower. Blades are sharpened and/or replaced every spring. I cover about 100 acres annually.... with most of it clipping/mulching heavy pasture residue. I run my PTO at about 90% of 540 at a 3mph ground speed for best results. I calculated that I would save about 3/4 gal of diesel (or more) if I ran the tractor at 1300 -1400 rpm. At my current price for farm diesel I would save somewher between $280 and $300. However, I like to listen to the radio while in the cab, doing this rather boring task... and at 2200 rpms (even though I have a rather quiet.. 79db noise level cab) ...it's still much too noisy for me to hear talk radio clearly..... you can only take so much country and western... mind starts to turn to mush after awhile... thanks for the tips...

How did you calculate the fuel savings? Do you find you have loss of cut quality when running the bushhog slow? I run mine at about 1/2 to 2/3 speed a lot of the time and works well with sharp blades. First rock strike I lose the quality though.

I ask how you calc'd the fuel savings because not many people have access to the part load brake specific fuel consuption tables for their tractor, they look like a topo map. They are not the same as the full power ones. For that matter, how do you even know what your hog is using for power? Or did you work back from the fuel you're using now?
