Dick, I've repaired a few, and there are a number of things that can be done, the most effective require a lot of work in the gear box. Are you willing to 'go deep'? Externally, you can eliminate end play in the vertical shaft of the 'box' and then make sure the steering arm is really TIGHT on its shaft. Just doing this should help a lot unless the internal spline is bad on the worm gear. I have never seen any serious wear on the gears themselves.
