SW EM Was the auger a fairly heavy load for the tractor? What you are calling a dent in the piston headland above the rings looks to me like an area that has melted due to combustion gases going past the rings. It is amazing if the engine did not make a lot of noise. If there is no real evidence of a spot on the head gasket that allowed the AF to get in the cylinders I would be sure to have the block's coolant passages pressure checked.
