My guess would be mechanical interference with the head in that area. Without seeing the top of the pistons it's hard to say what it may have been. The top of the piston is deformed down enough that it broke the rings and ring lands in that area. It also pushed some of the aluminum out enough that it is rubbing on the sleeve. That is the shiny area at the top.
