Ongoing carburator problem SMTA

Me again!!! Still having carb problems. Have changed Needle and seat, float, idle jet, gaskets. Wants to flood when I start it up and it is cold. Float setting is about 1 3/8 or below normal. Using very little choke to start but I get black smoke and it doesn't run well or sputters and dies. Usually fouls at least one plug in the process. Also changed plugs, points, cap, rotor, timing set. Any suggestions? What about a weak coil? Seems to run good when I get it going. I converted to 12 volt and have a resister in line with wire to + side of coil. Have had carburator apart several times and cleaned passages and everything else.
Desperate!!!! Evening wondering if JD carb will fit.
