Farmall SC smokes

Hi:
I am having trouble with my Farmall SC. I have restored it and am doing the fine tuning. I tried to adjust the carburetor and the distributor the best that I know how, but somewhere along the way the tractor still smokes black smoke, and it is hard to start. I believe the plugs are getting to much black soot on them? Someone told me to run it at about 1550 RPM's and make the adjustments, but I do not have a tackometer to know where to set it. Can I just push the throddle forward 3/4 to estimate it for this setting? Thanks any help will be greatly appreciated. Bob
