Does gas run out of the hole under the carb air intake when the engine is off?? If so, the float in the carb is set too high, or the needle valve and seat are bad, causing too much gas to flow resulting in flooding. Also, the float could be sticking, keeping the gas from shutting off. Another possibility is that the ignition timing is not correctly set. Being out of time will make it hard to start and result in smoking.
