When "tuning up" any engine, the timing has to be set correctly or all your carburetor adjusting will be in vain. Get a service manual and a timing light or better yet, borrow them AND a good mechanic to get the job done right. "Food for thought": black sooty smoke means the fuel mixture is too rich and/or very late timing. Blue oily smelling smoke means...well,you know what that means!
