The 340 engine runs at a higher rpm to make the HP , also the 340 engine is related to the "c" in construction. during that era IH used the 340 to fill a hp gap in there line up. If you ever look at a 404 you will see the same gas as the 340 hooked up to a 240 trans. but good luck on hooking them up. the 504 is the same bore and stroke but is based to 340 engine.
