when I was younger we threw first gear in one of our cubs, Now that was a noise... anyway, besides pto problems this was the extent to my tranny problems. I will look at my shop manual and see if I can see what you are talking about. I do remeber that once apon a time we had a problem with the PTO kicking out of gear. After several gear replacements, we noticed that the front seal was not installed properly and this allowed the shaft to slide forward and the splines did not line up correctly. Could this be what you are talking about? I am afraid I cannot picture the shafts in my mind so I will let you know. Hopefully Someone else will have a better idea. Also does the noise differ under a load (other than the tire lockups as you described.)or with the PTO on.
