Vince unless you feel a need to tear the pump down, you could drain the fluid, remove the fan blade assembly and then the packing nut. Dig out the old packing material and insert one layer of the new. Then tighten the nut back up, stick on the blades, fill the coolant up and give it a whirl. If you see any leaking. Stop it and tighten the nut further. There is a possiblility you will need to add a second layer of packing material so have two packages on hand.
