thanks for the response. i'm gonna add water conditoiner as i have no idea if any ever has been in there or not and it works great on my son's semi. the only book i have, an operators manual said it could be a d358 or d360 and i found a casting on the side of the block that says d360 so went with that. i asked the dealer is it was the same as a tractor engine and he said not it's not even made by IH but the book says it is.....the head gasket was shot, got it hot but shut it down before it got too hot so maybe i avoided major issues. thanks Gary
