43H Brakes

My 43H runs like a top, but it doesn't stop so well. I'm not sure if the brakes just need adjusting or if the bands need to be replaced. This is pretty academic in that the adjusting screw on the left side is sheared off. I will have to pull the housing on that side to do something about the adjusting screw, so I will be replacing the bands. Brakes and brake springs have a tendency to eat my lunch and I'm wondering what surprises I might have in working on these. It really looks like it is pretty simple. I assume the inside of these housings are dry or at least should be. I would appreciate any suggestions and advice any of you can give me; I'm sure most are smarter than I about this or we're all in real trouble.
