John: I've got the left side off. It's very dry and very dirty, like most other brakes I've seen. I see about 1/8" of the adjusting screw protruding inside, but I have a hard time seeing what this does. Should it have a flat pad on the end of it or just the screw ? Actually, the brake band doesn't look all that bad and certainly is not worn way down. The whole thing seems to be very tight and I wonder if it hasn't been too stiff to work well. I assume that the part that holds the ends of the band should lift out with the band. So far, I have not gotten this freed up. Unless they are quite expensive, I will go ahead and put new bands in while I have it apart. I have never had much luck at backing out twisted off bolts, so I'll probably have someone else tackle that. Any suggestions? By the way, I have just acquired a nice 51 John Deere MT. I really like the sound of that 2 cylinder engine. It sounds just like a helicopter landing. I'm sure that when my brother, the Colonel gets up here, he will think that he's been sent back for a third tour of flying choppers in Vietnam. He's alway said that our Mountainous country looks a lot like what he flew over. As usual, your knowledge of these machines is a great help to us that are new to this.

It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership,
