Perhaps it was converted from Pos to Neg ground n the ammeter leads werent swapped makikng it register bass ackwards like Rusty was talking about???? Id swap ammeter leads so it swings over to - discharge if lights or ignition are turned on engine not running,,,,,,,,,repolarize the genny to make sure,,,,,,,fire her up n see what happens !!!!!!!!!!
On the ammeter its Supply terminal should have only one wire, the one to the battery/starter, while its other Load terminal is what wires to BAT on the VR plus feeds hot battery voltage to loads like lights n ignition via their switches BAT input terminals.
Once polarized fire her up n ifffffffff shes charging the lights will glow noticeably brighter from slow idle to fast RPM and/or the battery voltage should rise from 12.6 to the 13 to 14 bolt range as posted below.
Regarding that genny Motor Test,,,,,, Start with the gennys field dead grounded (belt off of course) n apply hot battery voltage to its ARM post n she ought to spin (armature n brushes okay) but then if you unground the Field she ought to speed up noticeably indicating the field windings are likely okay. It needs to pass BOTH (spin then speed up) tests.
Sure the battery is okay and will accept a charge????

In this segment we will finish up on our fasteners and then work with ways to keep them from loosening up in the field. Capscrews, bolts and nuts are not the only means of holding two parts together. When dealing with thinner metals like sheet tin, a long bolt and
