560 wont start

I have a gas IH 560. I used it the other day and now it wont start.Its getting gas.It has new wires and plugs...points look good.It started up and while it was warming up it died and wont start.I even tried starting fluid.I have been told to replace the coil.How can i check the coil to see if its bad?? Will any 12 volt coil work ??. This tractor looks very nice but its no good to me not running and there is no one around here I can trust to work on it.. HELP
