Maintain the existing 6V system and get it up to snuff, and you'll be fine. 12V conversion is just a band-aid on the real problem, which could be bad cables, bad cable ends, bad starter, and/or bad battery. Eventually it won't start on 12V either, and you'll be here wanting to put a John Deere 24V generator and dual 12V batteries on it to get it started, spending several hundred and lots of time when a rebuilt starter for ~$150 or $50 in battery cables would've fixed it. If the tractor doesn't have an electrical system, then by all means go 12V, but if you already have a 6V, then all it needs is maintenance.
