The 666 and 686 diesels have the D312 engine instead of the D282 that came in the 656.

Beyond that, not much changed. All had the mechanical TA. All had mechanical brakes. It was likely an effort by IH to reduce development costs, as things were starting to get really tight for the company. The tractor was a proven design with lineage clear back to the 300 (yes, the 656,666,686 had basically the same rear end as a 300!!!), so there was no need to change it.
