I am wondering what the differences are between a 656, 666 and a 686.

I know a little about 656s

Do any of the others have the hydraulic TA or hydraulic brakes?

Thanks for the help! Erik in WI

I have a 656 with over 10,000 hrs, still runs great....Starts in the coldest weather too..I live in Iowa. I have a loader on it and I have never had problems. My grandpa first owned it...now me. He said it was the best tractor he ever owned, i will definitly agree.

When I shut it down, it showed 6.1V....I didn't see any bubbling @ top of battery...but, only ran it about 1/2hr.

First of all, Thanks to all who answered.

Second, it is a damn shame that neither the 66 or 86 series had the better TA or brakes.
I am looking for something of this size to replace the gas thirsty pig of a 706 I own for chore work.

Well, I better start lookin' in the classifieds!

Thanks again!

Eric,

There is nothing wrong with their T/As or their brakes. Millions of 'em still working today.

In reality, very little is different from one to the next to the next.

The 666 and 686 diesels have the D312 engine instead of the D282 that came in the 656.

Beyond that, not much changed. All had the mechanical TA. All had mechanical brakes. It was likely an effort by IH to reduce development costs, as things were starting to get really tight for the company. The tractor was a proven design with lineage clear back to the 300 (yes, the 656,666,686 had basically the same rear end as a 300!!!), so there was no need to change it.

About this lineage thing; with all due respect, I don't think ya have it quite right.

The 686/666/656 tractors are basically nothing more than an updated version of the 560, which in turn was an updated version of the 400/450 and going back to the SMs and the M.

The 300 is and updated SH, originally from the H and it later led to the 350s then the 460. Whole lot smaller tractor.

A bit later and while all this was going on, the added 706 style line led right up the pack thru the 756/856/1256 and the 766/966/1066/1466 tractors.

They are all grouped into their own distinct family designated by size.

Yes much the same tractor except the engine. I think some of the 666 or 686 had a D310 engine but I'm not sure. Someone else will know. Its unfortunate that IH didn't make some transmission improvements too.The real competion seemed to be in the larger row crop tractors so thats where IH and JD spent the most in development, and the smaller tractors of both makes suffered.
