Water temp guage not reading

I've got a 460 diesel that I just put a tank heater on. I removed the temp sensing bulb and installed a tee into the head, and installed the sensing bulb into one side of the tee, and connected the hose out the top of the heater to the other side of the tee. Now my temp guage barely registers. I have the radiator 100% full and free of air. I cracked the sensing bulb nut loose until water leaked out to vent the air out. What gives?
