Well, if the battery (+)is connected to the chassis, the coil (+) should be connected to the distributor, no exceptions I know of. As far as needing a ballast resistor, or not, that will depend on the coil's primary resistance, which can either be measured, or are there any part numbers on the coil we could use to figure out what coil you have?
