Hey guys, Im looking for a little help on this. Been scratching my head and Im against the wall. Ive got a 1958 Farmall 350 row crop and a 1957 International 350 utility. Both are shorting points like crazy. Ive ordered the petronix electronic ignition kit for one of them... to try it out. But Im fuzzy on how to connect it. Both are 12 volt "positive ground" with 12 v battery with positive post going to ground on the frame, 12v generator, 12v starter and 12 v lights. I want to update the utility first which has "no external resister". The wire that feeds the points connects to the negitive side of the coil. While on the row crop (with external resister) it connects to the positive side of the coil. Whats the difference? Does it not matter which side of the coil goes to the distributor? Ive ordered the 12v positive ground kit that shows the utility is right, but the wiring diagram in the manuals show the row crop is correct. HELP!!! Also if I install the petronix kit on the row crop later on will I need a new coil that does not have an external resister...and discard the old resister? If so which side of the coil would go to the distributor? Thanks in advance for you help...

For a (+) ground system (battery (+) post connected to the chassis), the wire from the ignition switch, through the resistor (if used) connects to the (-) side of the coil.

The (+) side of the coil connects to the distributor (breaker points and condensor). That's the way it is supposed to be, PERIOD!

Now, before intstalling the PERTRONIX UNITS, you need to be SURE you have (+) ground Pertronix units, and connect them EXACTLY as shown in the Pertronix information, or you will LET ALL THE SMOKE OUT OF THEM.

Be SURE to follow Pertronix's instructions, as to the lowest resistance coil you can use without a ballast resistor, as this is another thing that can let all the smoke out of the module.

Thanks Bob, That explains the row crop, but whats the story with the utilty that doesnt have a resister and has the negitive side of the coil going to the distributor? Any thoughts on it? Here's Pertronix online page for the 12v positive hook up.

"but whats the story with the utilty that doesnt have a resister and has the negitive side of the coil going to the distributor?"

Well, if the battery (+)is connected to the chassis, the coil (+) should be connected to the distributor, no exceptions I know of.

As far as needing a ballast resistor, or not, that will depend on the coil's primary resistance, which can either be measured, or are there any part numbers on the coil we could use to figure out what coil you have?

Bob,
I took your advice and switched the wires on the utility moving the positive terminal to the distributor. And it still runs! So things make a little more sense now. I betting before me someone did a rewire job and just connected things wrong. It now matches the other tractor. Just waiting for my kit. Im going to purchase the suggessted high output coil that petronix says to use. There are no numbers or marking on the old coil. Shows around 1.8 ohms between the - and + and around 10.8 from the - to the center rotor lead. Thanks for helping.
