I understood that the L terminal gave a quicker response[ immediate] to a load that was placed on the system. I believe that it is connected to & draws current from a winding in the voltage regulator relay in the regulator itself. The more current that is drawn, the less the relay pulls the contact & hence more output from the generator. Hope some of this makes sense.
