Don't mess with those gears, if you do the exact teeth have to match when you put it back together. The whole piece that contains the gears comes off, the points are behind that. Your tractor runs off the mag. The mag is a self contained ignition system, all the generator or in your case alternator does is charge the battery. Many H's and M's do just what you say. They fire immediately, die, and flood. As the others said try to start without the choke. When it fires, pull the choke out about half way to keep it running.
