Knowing a little less than nothing about tractors,I need help. My M will not quite start. Sounds as if she is going to but will not quite fire up. Gas runs out of the bottom of the carg when choked. Carb has had a new kit installed, works fine on another tractor, but still floods and won't start on mine. This M has been converted to 12v. Bought it that way.It still has the mag on it, but runs off the alternator. Now for my dumb question. Where are the points? took off the distibuter cap and rotor, took off the plate, little gears inside, no points or condenser Where are they?

I didn't see a definite answer to your question about getting to the points. Remove dist. cap & rotor. Don't remove the 2 screws which hold a small round plate near the center shaft. There are 3 screws somewhat evenly spaced around the outside circumference of the back plate on the mag. Remove these 3 screws & the back plate should pull off easily to open the points area.

If the two geras under that little cover are not in time under the rotor it will not run it will fire on the wrong plug at the wrong time you must fix that problem first. farmallmagneto.com

Had this happen recently on my M. Had carb rebuilt - tractor ran fine. Started flooding -gas running out. Removed carb, and then bowl, found that the pin holding the float was loose and had worked out. Fixed that by putting pin back and crimping the holder that holds the pin, checked the float setting (was OK)and that fixed the problem.

Don't mess with those gears, if you do the exact teeth have to match when you put it back together. The whole piece that contains the gears comes off, the points are behind that. Your tractor runs off the mag. The mag is a self contained ignition system, all the generator or in your case alternator does is charge the battery. Many H's and M's do just what you say. They fire immediately, die, and flood. As the others said try to start without the choke. When it fires, pull the choke out about half way to keep it running.

Well you said it almsot fires up so your spark is probably ok. Sounds like you have it flooded. Turn off the gas and then try to start it. If it starts then turn the gas back on and you will probably be ok. Most of the time you shouldn't even need to choke it to get it to start.

Okay, I tried hoth methods, even used starting fluid. No luck. Sure sounds like it is going to start, in fact does enough to make the bendix whirl than quits.

At this point if you could give it a pull I will bet it will start and will probably start well after. I've seen more then one that would do that but after a short pull they start and then for some funny reason will start just fine after that. Of course new plugs and the right type of plug wires go a long way. If it is a mag type system and you have car type plug wires on it then theres about 75% of you problem. You need true copper core plug wires or you loose 50-75% of your spark in the wires

Or try this. Open throttle a couple notches. Do not choke engine unless you need to to keep it running when cold. Now start engine. This method worked well for me.

This just needs some analytical troubleshooting as my dad used to say: a problem is easy to fix when you know what the real problem is. I think we"re missing a lot of what happened in between in other words what happened since the last time it was running?
