I also fretted just last week over a problem like yours with a Cub that had been sitting up quite a while. After a tune-up, it still would hit and miss, run good, then run poorly. I changed carbs. to a known good one, same thing. I finally removed the valve cover and turned it over by hand and watched the valves open and close. Yep, that was the problem, the valves were sticking intermittently. One or two would stick, then one would let go, then another, then all would work, then another would stick. After I freed them all, just bump the starter and it was purring. May not be your problem, but easy and well worth checking out.
