I have a farmall cub. I have had it gone through within the last year and the working parts are good...and it runs..but..it only hits on 2 or 3 maybe 2 and then maybe 4 cylinders...and maybe not..I dont even know where to begin. The only thing I am sure of is that I have compression...i guess the fire and gas would be next...any suggestions.

Whats spark look like on all wires?

Metal core wires? new points? Clean carb? new coil? ( if battery ignition ).. jumper around ignition switch?

Soundguy! Is this the same Soundguy from the TractorByNet - Vintage Tractors board? If so, I don't think I've ever seen you on this board. Before I bought my 350 Utility you gave me all kinds of advice on Ford 8n's and Jubilee's. You were very knowledgeable on the Fords. I'm glad to see you here, if you are indeed the same Soundguy.

I am. .. And actually.. I've been here at YTmag longer than TBN.. though I rarely post in the IH forums.. ( mostly in the ford forums.. though I read most of them as i have many different 'flavors' of tractors.)

It could be as simple as one or more bad spark plug wires.

I also fretted just last week over a problem like yours with a Cub that had been sitting up quite a while. After a tune-up, it still would hit and miss, run good, then run poorly. I changed carbs. to a known good one, same thing. I finally removed the valve cover and turned it over by hand and watched the valves open and close. Yep, that was the problem, the valves were sticking intermittently. One or two would stick, then one would let go, then another, then all would work, then another would stick. After I freed them all, just bump the starter and it was purring. May not be your problem, but easy and well worth checking out.

every one of your observations to your firing was exactly like my cub. i narrowed it donwn to the mag. sent it in to have rebuilt and she runs like a champ. the person who rebuilt it said it something inside was slipping, a keyway or something to that effect. thats why sometimes it would run on 2 or 4 or 3 clylinders.

What do the plugs look like?? Pull the plug out first off and let use know what they look like. I could be as simple as a bad cap/rotor of maybe a carb problem. You say you have good compression but have you checked it with a gauge??

Hook up your timing light. Try each plug wire, one at a time, to see if your tractor is firing consistantly on each plug. This will tell you if it's an ignition problem or fuel related.

Thomas, you are at the right place to figure it out. You are probably going to get a lot of opinions, but where I would start is timing. You say you have compression, but is it on the right cycle to your distributor and wire arrangement? You need to make sure you first have #1 piston TDC (Top Dead Center)on the compression stroke(#1 is the closest to the front of the tractor). To do that, remove the spark plug from #1 and place your finger over the hole, turn the crank over, either with the fan belt or someone else turning a hand crank, until you feel compression pushing against your finger. As soon as that pressure stops, you should be TDC. As I have a Cub & a Super C, I can't remember whether the timing mark is on the flywheel or there might be a pointer on the belt pulley, but you should be close on either one. Firing order is 1-3-4-2. Are you sure you have your plug wires in the right sequence (1 is approx. 2 o'clock, 3 below that, the rest in clockwise order)? If you get TDC, with the spark plug wires in the right order, it should start, maybe run rough, and then you can adjust the distributor by loosening the two cap screws attaching it to the governor housing and twist the distributor to best run. Good luck!
