SA fan hub

What kind of seal is supposed to be on the back side of fan hub. I have taken it apart and i do not see any evidence of any kind of a seal. there are 3 grooves on the shaft.If you have ever taken one apart you will know what i am talking about.

It leaks out the back by the nut. I just wonder if a previous owner had it apart and left a peice out. Is there any online breakdowns of this? Thanks
