dual speed broken pto shaft

I broke the 540 pto shaft on the 986 dual speed pto. Is there a way to get the rear cover off the pto unit without dissasembling the PTO clutch? The only instructions I have is for complete diassembly. Looking at the parts diagram, if the snap ring on the rear of the 1000 RPM shaft is smaller than the seal, it could come off. Thanks for any help or advice.
