Well Jim, I think you were right on. While trying many different things, I was in the process of getting # 1 to TDC, lining up the marks,etc. While doing all of this, I could not get the rotor to point to #1 so took out distributor, reset to #1 and no pop. Just for giggles, took cap off to be sure of which way the rotor turned and found that it did not turn at all! AH HA! Dist gears have gone to grief and a rebuilt one is on the way! Thanks all so much!!!
