Are you sure it is gas? I don't think there is any way that a bad carb could possibly leak gas into the engine, even if the needle valve was not working at all the gas would still run out of the carb long before there was enough accumulation to run into the engine. It would have to fill the carb, fill the manifold, and then go in past the engine valves.
