300 ute clutch won't disengage

I got this 300 utility this spring, engine runs good but when it is running I can't get it to go in gear (gears grind with clutch depressed). I can get it into gear when engine is off but tractor will move when I try starting it with the clutch depressed. The PTO works fine.

I heard maybe the clutch plate may be installed backwards (if the previous owner replaced it) or that these tractors may get stuck plates if they sit for a long time without running, which this one has.

Anyone know what to look for or what to do? Thanks
