I’m not trying to be smart here, but if you are mechanically savvy enough to tackle rebuilding a hydraulic pump (they really aren’t that hard to do by the way) I would not expect you to have any problems with that seal. However (again at the risk of sounding smart) anything can (and probably has been) screwed up by someone. I guess I’d look at it this way. The pump is useless now, so what have you to loose by tackling it yourself? With some care the worst case would be you have to take the pump in to have it put back together by someone else. At least the good news is that the engine isn't shot.
