IH was thinking like the rest of the industry. I don"t think anybody made a 12v coil. GM always used a 6v coil with an external resistor wire. That was so the could give the coil 12v for starting,, directly from the starter solenoid. Ford used a 6v coil with an internal resistor, so they marked it 12v. They could not give it 12v for starting like GM. That is what you bought. Somebody probably removed the resistor. A 6v coil runs fine on 12v, but the higher voltage burns the points. Since the 12v coil has an internal resistor, it is fine to use if it will run.
