Warped Head on cub

Had the head checked at machine shop on cub and it was warped but showed no cracks when magged. Question is could this have been the problem for it not cranking and getting lots of water in the oil? The plugs had to be getting moisture on them while trying to crank over and the compression was low at 50 psi. Think I may try getting the head resurfaced and trying her again before a total engine removal and rebuild.(this looks to be fairly expensive) What is a range of a total rebuild cost of a cub? GNB
