Yes a warped head could let the head gasket leak water into the
combustion chamber causing all those problems. As long as the
head is off, what do you see? Is there a pronounced ridge at the
top of the cylinder? How do the cylinders look? Glassy smooth,
or scored and discolored? Borrow a bore gauge and check to see
how out of round the cylinders are. Any burned or bad valves?
It's easier to look at some of these things now that the head is
off to see if anything else needs attention.
As far as cost, I don't know. However, if it needs it, do it. It's
worth it. You'll be glad you did every time you start it and it runs
great. You may be able to get by with just fixing that head
though.
