5488 Transmission

5488 transmission ranger shifter stopped working yesterday. Only range that does not grind when the clutch is released is reverse. Anyone know what is going on ?? Had this simular problem a few years ago and the dealer put a "kit" conversion in the tractor about a $500 part.
Any ideas ??
