There's no Torque amplifier in a 5488. If I were a betting man, I say you've shelled out a set of synchronizers or even the main engine clutch has let go. The main engine clutch is a wet-type clutch pack, and there was an "update kit" that got put on a lot them back when the tractors were fairly new, mid to late 80's. I don't know exactly what the difference is between the old style and the "updated" style, but usually the update fixes them for good...
