12 V batt in M

A day or so ago, someone was talking about a 12 V battery in an M Farmall. Forgive my ignorance, but can a 12 V battery be dropped in a 6 V setup on an M and everything be operable? Is there anything that needs to be done to prevent it from frying anything. Can someone educate me? I may just need to get an M from an old barn to my house. The old 6 V battery is DEAD. Would using a 12 V or 6 V be the way to go?
