I think that if it will "seldom" start from the 6v battery your first course should be to figure out why. My Super M starts very well off of 6v, even with the battery reversed!
I'd suggest before you spend any money on other things find out why the 6v works so poorly.
Are your battery cables of sufficient size? I'm using 2ga(I think) but if I replace again I'll go to 1 or 0. Is your starter in good shape? How's the general wiring holding up? After 52 years its bound to be worn in places and to have built up alot of resistance.
