Leonard: Your concerns are quite real but not insurmountable. Make the necessary changes you need and keep the front end. You have a front end with heavy spindles, don't knock that one. The changes will add a bit to the cost, but may be less than broken light spindles.

Contrary to what most people tend to believe today these front ends were not H, M, 300 or 400 front ends. They were just front ends with optional mounting hardware and optional spindles.
