i think you already solved your problem. If you ran her hard & she didnt boil over under a load, then the cooling system was doing its job. If it spit after shutdown, then the hot engine, not circulating water to cool it, overheated & pushed the water out. Nothing serious, basic physics, fluids tend to expand in relation to the temperature, once they reach maximum expansion they change from liqiud to gas state. I dont think you went to boiling just hot enough to overflow.
