problems with clutch adjustment on Farmall A

When I start tractor and in order to get it into gear, I have to grind the gears. I have tried to adjust clutch so there is about 1 inch free play, but that didn't help. Once I have it in gear, then shift to neutral with clutch held in, I can then put it back in gear without it grinding. Clutch works fine, doesn't slip, pressure required to disengage the clutch feels normal.
Throw out bearing was making some noise, greased it, its now quiet. Do I have to split the tractor to fix this problem?? Thanks for any help.
