I need help from someone with more knowledge of IH than me. My neighbor has a 544 gasoline and an ARPS loader. We have reworked the shifter and it has very little 'slop' and shifts smoothly. The casting is not too worn. When the tractor is placed under a load - such as when pushing the loader into a pile of dirt or trying to reverse uphill with a no-till - it "hangs" in gear and no amount of manipulation will remove it from gear. With the clutch depressed, the tractor continues to idle indicating that the clutch is operating properly. However, with the clutch depressed, the unit won't roll at all as if the brakes are set. Operating the torque multiplier will immediately free the unit and it will roll with the clutch depressed and can be shifted freely without binding. A co-worker with a 460 tells me his operates the same way and that lends creedance to this being a designed operating condition. Is it? Is this normal? I don't have any manuals on this tractor and am just trying to keep it working for the neighbor. No one around here has any experience with this model.
