wiring gauge

A metal fastener came loose and slid down the negative battery cable to the starter and was touching the copper threaded post and the starter housing at the same time. This melted some of the rubber insulation on the battery cable and burned the fabric of the other wire back several inches. My question is what gauge wire should I use to replace this? and How many feet should I buy to redo the entire tractor? I am not necessarily interested in orginality, but need to know if there is anything special about this wire. What would you use? Thanks -- Martin
